Oslo’s: Top men’s clothing store

Oslo’s on Queen Anne is being called one of the top 10 clothing stores for men by Forbes Magazine. The shop not only sells James Perse tees and Theory jackets, they also have an in-store barbershop that offers a traditional straight-edge shave (with a clay mask treatment for a little more pampering). Way to go!

The classic bubble lamp

Back in the ’40s George Nelson created the “bubble lamp” which were discontinued at the end of the ’70s. Modernica picked up the line and it’s now back on the market. The classic lamps are simple and distinguishable. They are created with a steel frame and tautly stretched white plastic polymer (that feels like fabric to me). The big bubbles spread the light evenly through a room and will definitely be the topic of conversation at any dinner party. I found this large Saucer Bubble Lamp at Velocity. It sells for $365. It also comes in smaller sizes.

Triple shoes

There’s a (somewhat) new shop for shoes in Ballard. Triple opened a couple of months ago on Ballard Ave just above Rudy’s and King’s Hardware. The hip shop is owned by the same folks that own Market Street Shoes. The 2nd floor space is extremely cool. There are three distinct areas - one for everyday wear, one for modern luxury shoes, and a third for Triple merchandise and rare vinyl records. Check out how they display their shoes.

Pint-sized politics

I had to laugh when I saw this shirt at Pop Tots last weekend. Who says Junior can’t tell it like it is? The shop is full of some cool kiddo clothes, rock-n-roll clothes, as well as some political shirts, too. Don’t worry, it’s not just the president who’s made the front of a pint-sized shirt. Obama & Hillary are also represented. While you might not think our president is a poopyhead, I know a few adults who would love to wear a t-shirt like this. It sells for $27.

I’m learning that pregnancy comes with a bunch of rules that aren’t always easy to follow. Women can’t eat, drink or pretty much do anything without questioning whether or not it’s safe for the baby. One of the problems I’m having is with my skin. It’s oilier and breaks out a lot easier. Too bad I can’t use salicylic acid. Then I came across Belli Skincare. It’s made specifically for pregnant women. All the ingredients are tested specifically with baby in mind. Bright spring vases

Each spring a switch gets flipped and all of a sudden I’m mad about bright colors. Maybe it’s the vibrant flowers in my garden, I’m not really sure. This year I’m decorating a new house. The walls are all pretty pale or neutral that are screaming for personality. I found these great blue vases (that come in a variety of beautiful colors) at Camelion Design. The small one is $9, the large one is $12.50.

Joy Chen shoes

On my annual quest for new spring shoes I came across these caramel patent leather Joy Chen heels at Clementine. The linen-wrapping on the heel and on the bottom help to give these shoes a casual look, while the patent and tortoise shell buckle dress them up a bit. You could wear these with just about anything. They cost $188.

A stylish twist on the little black dress

I sure wish I had somewhere to wear this USE unused pleat dress that I found at Merge! Pat (the owner) says that this number is not for the fashion faint-of-heart and I can see why. It’s cut short and sassy. Add a pair of spiky heels and you’ve got yourself a great night-on-the-town dress. It sells for $195.

The Hushamok Hammock

My husband and I are expecting baby #1 in August. We’re still a bit in baby-denial which means we haven’t really started the nursery yet. As any pregnant woman should do, I took a trip to Tottini to look around and get a feeling for this whole baby thing. I found this Hushamok Hammock that is supposed to literally rock your baby to sleep. They call it the bed for the “fourth trimester” and it basically mimics the swaying movement that baby loved in the womb. While it is a little pricey, people I’ve talked to say it’s worth every penny. It really does help the baby sleep. The hammock comes in several colors and the stand comes in either wood or aluminum. It’s also portable so you can take it to grandma & grandpa’s house. The Hushamok Hammock is $429.

Get rid of your toxic polish

Did you know that nail polish is made with some pretty gross toxins? Formaldehyde, Toluene and DBP are the big 3, which is why most nail salons all have that same gross smell. From April 15-May 15, butterLONDON is letting you bring in 3 bottles of polish with one (or more) of the 3 chemicals and you’ll get a bottle of their “3-free” lacquer for free. I must say that they’re lacquer is probably the best I’ve ever used so it would be worth the trip in there. As I wrote before they give fantastic manicures, too!
