Kids
I had to laugh when I saw this shirt at Pop Tots last weekend. Who says Junior can’t tell it like it is? The shop is full of some cool kiddo clothes, rock-n-roll clothes, as well as some political shirts, too. Don’t worry, it’s not just the president who’s made the front of a pint-sized shirt. Obama & Hillary are also represented. While you might not think our president is a poopyhead, I know a few adults who would love to wear a t-shirt like this. It sells for $27.

My husband and I are expecting baby #1 in August. We’re still a bit in baby-denial which means we haven’t really started the nursery yet. As any pregnant woman should do, I took a trip to Tottini to look around and get a feeling for this whole baby thing. I found this Hushamok Hammock that is supposed to literally rock your baby to sleep. They call it the bed for the “fourth trimester” and it basically mimics the swaying movement that baby loved in the womb. While it is a little pricey, people I’ve talked to say it’s worth every penny. It really does help the baby sleep. The hammock comes in several colors and the stand comes in either wood or aluminum. It’s also portable so you can take it to grandma & grandpa’s house. The Hushamok Hammock is $429.

Most kids I know love to run, jump and play on furniture. The problem is that they’re not allowed on mom’s expensive living room sofa. So how do you turn their attention elsewhere? Tottini is carrying a new brand of modern tumbling toys called bObles. They are made from a firm foam material that is perfect for romping. To wash them off just throw them in the shower or hose them down. I personally love this pink and red piglet. It sells for $79.

Keeping your little pumpkin warm this October has never been cuter! These adorable jack-o-lantern hats will keep little kids’ heads warm and put everyone around you in the Halloween mood. Local artist Christina Englehorn knits each oh-so-scary pumpkin by hand. She also knits several other hats including frogs, ladybugs and monkeys. Found at Bouncing Wall on Queen Anne, they cost $45.

Yesterday afternoon I popped into Flora & Henri for a quick look around. If you’ve never been, it’s a beautiful luxury children’s clothing boutique. All the mini cashmere sweaters were hung perfectly on the rack, and the smaller-than-small corduroy pants were folded neatly on the shelves. Bebé tres chic! After taking my usual stroll around the perimeter I found myself reading the labels of some great sweaters, hats and booties. Bebe’ Ravi, which translates to “baby’s delight,” is hand-knitted and crocheted from the best Italian yarns. Surprisingly, its manufacturing headquarters is located in Nakuru, Kenya. They hire locals who can’t find other jobs and many women who are widows that have lost their husbands to AIDS. Bebé Ravi has also opened an orphanage to help the children of the community. It’s wonderful to see a company that’s so dedicated to such an important cause! These cute wool booties are $44.

For Seattleites and Eastsiders, Tacoma seems far away, not worth visiting, and stinky (oh yes, the famous aroma of Tacoma). Last weekend my folks flew in to town to do some condo shopping in the T-town area where my sister lives. While waiting for the realtor we came across a fantastic baby (and mom) boutique called My Petit Pea. Being 7 months pregnant my sister and mom just about fell over themselves to go inside. Wow. Seriously chic baby clothes, stylish maternity clothes, and cute toys. Downtown Tacoma is in the middle of a revitalization project. More boutiques, good bars & trendy restaurants are opening. It may just be worth the drive!

What do you get when you cross a baby with an ipod? Well the “ipoo’d” onesie, of course! I was on my way to drinks with a girlfriend at the Pink Door when we passed by the Boston Street Children’s Everything Store. These incredibly cute clothes were hanging in the window. I was laughing so hard in Post Alley. So if you know someone who can’t be separated from their ipod for more than 10 minutes… and who has a baby. This is the perfect gift! They sell for $24.95.

The construction nightmare in the south Lake Union neighborhood is starting to pay off. While cranes, dump trucks and flaggers are still prominant, something great is coming along: boutiques! Last week my friend Bernard and I went for coffee when I ran upon Tottini. The best way to describe it is an urban baby’s playground for nursery furnishings and toys. The shop reminded me of a baby store in SoHo - although this one is much bigger. This orange plastic Puppy by Magis is great. Use it as a seat or a climbing contraption for your tot. It comes in several sizes and colors and ranges in price from $58-$390.

While the big kids are scootin’ their way down the sidewalk on the Razor scooter, chances are the little ones want one, too. Well, don’t say no without checking out this little guy. The wooden caterpiller scooter from Clover has four wheels (much more sturdy) and is only a few inches off the ground (just in case they’re not coordinated). C’mon mom, tots need their wheels, too. This sells for $85.

As we begin to think about updating our own wardrobes, don’t forget the kids! They need to stay stylish this fall, too. That’s where Madrona Moose comes in. This shop carries unique clothing for newborns to kids size 10 and toys that you probably won’t find elsewhere. In fact The Moose has been compared to children’s stores in New York and London. Check out this really cute Rachel Riley duffel coat. It’s on sale for $49.50, available in several colors (I just really like the red).
