Cat owners rejoice! Your living room furniture has never looked so good. Thanks to Seattle company Marmalade, cats can recline, scratch and nap all they want on this cat-friendly furniture. The Sweet Lounge is made of specially formulated cardboard with hard panels on each side. Its curved corners are designed for your cat to have a comfy place to rest his eyes after a long day of napping. The sleek design is also a nice bonus. Natural, recycled materials and non-toxic adhesive are environmentally safe. Goodbye ugly carpeted cat perch, hello durable Sweet Lounge! I found this one at Juniper for $140. They’re also sold at several pet boutiques around town.

After I dropped my car off at the dealership in Ballard on Monday, I had about an hour to wander around. (Oh darn!) While perusing the shops along Ballard Avenue I went into Ballard Home Comforts and found these great oilcloth table cloths. My dining room is a bright yellow and an accent wall in an adjoining room is a deep royal blue, so I wanted something that would tie the two rooms together. Since summer is almost over (not that we’ve had much of a summer to begin with) I also wanted something that would bring the brightness of the season into the house as we transition into fall. The 48″X70″ oilcloth is $28.

We just got back from a great week in New York and I must say, they’ve got great shopping! (duh). I’ll write more later, but I wanted to write a quick blurb about my favorite shop - Clio. It’s a quaint shop on a quiet SoHo street full of fun things for your home. The owners cross the globe to find unique goods to sell. I have always loved this handblown glass pitcher from the Czech Republic. It sells for $122 (and you can buy it online).

I got an email the other day from a bride looking for bridesmaids gifts. Something that’s not “generic.” Finding that perfect gift for your best girls can be a stress, but check these out: personalized drinkware from Girly Girl Gifts. They’re definitely not your run-of-the-mill present! You can personalize each one - for your redheads with short hair to your blondes with waves. You can even add a short message. The Girly Girls personalize martini glasses, wine glasses, champagne flutes, sake sets, shot glasses and coffee mugs. Basically, they cover all your friends’ drink needs (They also do plates and clothing). The drinkware runs from $9 for the coffee mug to $21 for the champagne flute.

I love Seattle. Better yet, I love showing off Seattle. A few weeks ago we were walking around Ballard in search of the perfect best man’s gift when we walked into Venue. This shop is full of local artists who each have their own passions, backgrounds and creations. On the wall I saw these great accordian cards by Karin Vance Chickadel. These multi-layered cut out bound books remind me of paper dolls, only (obviously) much better. They come in different colors, different landscapes and different sizes. This grey Seattle-scape is around $30.

My friend just celebrated a birthday. It’s always an adventure shopping for her because she has fantastic taste. There’s no fallback of a scented candle or bath salts with her - I want to get her something unique that she’ll appreciate. This year I found this beautiful blown glass hour-glass at Stuhlbergs on Queen Anne. They had small ones and large ones, white sand and black sand. I opted for the large one with black sand for $28. Don’t let the “hour glass” name confuse you, this guy is a 42-minute timer. I know, 42 minutes?

Fresh flowers always put a smile on my face, so I keep them around my house year-round. Instead of using that old bud vase my 8th grade boyfriend gave me (I never throw anything away), I decided to go find something different. Much different. Don’t get me wrong, I have tons of vases in every size, shape and color, but they’re all made of glass or plastic. Click! Design That Fits over in West Seattle has natural rubber vases! This orange one sells for $23. Now the next time my fiancé accidentally pushes the vase off the table with his briefcase, the vase won’t break! I love it!

Less is more so they say and I’d agree, especially when it comes to lighting. There are times when I don’t want my overhead light on or even a traditional lamp glowing, just some background mood lighting. Enlighten in Seattle has exactly that. For the past several years the owner (from Thailand) and his wife have been creating bamboo lamps that create more of a subtle atmosphere. This 13-inch lamp provides plenty of light on those stormy nights when it feels good to just sit back and listen to the rain. It sells for $50. I mention the Thailand connection because a portion of purchases from Enlighten go to support community organizations there that need our help.

For some reason (maybe because I’m a clutz), I always chip my dishes. Putting them in and taking them out of the dishwasher is always an adventure. Although I’ve never spent more than $5 for a dinner plate, I probably will after experiencing Heath Ceramics. The simplicity of the pieces is unique. It’s sturdy. It’s durable. And I’d say it’s worth every penny. I found this Plaza collection in redwood at Bitters Co. in Fremont. Dinner plates sell for about $30 a piece.

Since daylight is at a premium, I went in search of some alternate illumination. Chartreuse is a great shop in downtown with a combination of vintage furniture and modern pieces. While the new pieces are unique, I was drawn to this vintage Murano table lamp. It’s chip-free and in perfect condition. Even cooler, the entire body of this lamp is hand-blown. It sells for $450.
