Bags
When I first saw this bag I thought, “hhmm.. Did my mom have that bag when I was little?” The answer is no, but she could have. Rachel Nasvik is inspired by those bags our moms may have had years ago. The modern vintage pieces are all vegetable dyed Italian leather. This Patricia Satchel is $586 at Lambs Ear.

Tis the season of the clutch. If you don’t have one, you need one. Local girl Sabrina Love Rodriguez has found her calling by designing exquisite handbags. Her designs are classic, with simple lines and high-quality Italian leather & hardware. When I picked up the white croc clutch (actually I think I picked up the black one) I was impressed with the size, weight and feel of it. It’s not too big or bulky at 12″ long and 6 1/2″ tall. My phone, wallet and lipstick fit perfectly while still keeping the feminine look. Available online or at Rue, it sells for $238.

Seattle has a new handbag hangout: clutch. This bright shop located in the Fairmont Olympic Hotel building has a great selection! From Italian coin purses, to large bucket bags, belted clutches to leather hobos you can find a bag for any occasion. The owners are avid boutique shoppers and always wondered why there were shoe boutiques but no handbag boutique. And so clutch was born. If you’ve got a handbag fetish, like many of us girls do, save your pennies - prices start around the mid-$200’s.

One of my girlfriends emailed me yesterday about a new boutique in the Wedgwood neighborhood called Fresh. Of course I immediately hopped in my car to check it out. This boutique is a one-stop-shop for any occasion! Need a hostess gift? No problem. Need a baby gift? No problem. Need a new cami? No problem. The way the owners stock the store is by asking, “now what would we want in this situation (fill in actuall situation here)?” It’s magnificent. They have lots of (inexpensive) jewelry and fun, sassy cards. I fell in love with this Chelsey Henry tote. It can be a diaper bag, a laptop bag, a carry-on, or whatever else you can think of. It sells for $155. I’d say if you don’t live in/near Wedgwood that this boutique is worth the drive.

My sister is pregnant. YAY! She put me in charge of finding her the perfect diaper bag, so I immediately set some ground rules. First, no Winnie the Pooh (sorry for those of you with Pooh bags) and second, nothing boring. Today’s moms are discovering that practical doesn’t have to be ugly. While on Queen Anne last week I popped into urban kids play and found this great Fleurville “Mothership” Diaper bag. It’s designed to stand up on its own & stay open so you don’t have to put the baby down to rummage through the bag. It’s also PVC free (I didn’t know they put PVC in diaper bags. Strange). It comes in these stripes, dots, designs & solid colors. The Mothership costs $150.

I bought a new bag this week. I didn’t need it, but I bought it anyway. That makes for a grand total of… way too many bags (according to my husband). Polite Society has several new lines for spring including Jack Gomme bags out of Paris. Ooh La La! This powder blue rectangle “Filly” is my new treasure. The fabric is polyester canvas and the cream straps are leather. The thing is durable, which is great because I travel so much. The price tag said $142, but it was on sale for 25% off because of an itty bitty spot that I can’t even find anymore. 25% off?!?! How could I pass that up! Now don’t you see why I had to have it?

I consider myself to be the one-woman crusade against the all-black outfit. I’ve been to several events in the past week where I saw too many people wearing dark clothes. It’s SPRING! I know it doesn’t feel like it yet, but according to the forecast it will very soon. Let’s all raise our right hands and say, “I promise to celebrate spring this year with bright fabrics and colorful outfits.” If you can’t bring yourself to put away the drab, at least dress it up with a fun handbag. This bag by Annabelle Handbags stood out to me. It’s called “Spring Blossoms” and if looking at it doesn’t make you want to skip across the park and smell the flowers, I’m not really sure what will. This classic style costs $45.

I travel a lot for work, which means I need to have a sturdy make-up bag. A few weeks ago, Kam Martin emailed me to tell me about her work. One of the things I look for in a travel bag is how durable it is. Kam’s bags are not only durable but they’re very cool. They’re made from vintage fabrics and are tested by people that put bags through the wringer (so to speak). The medium make-up bag sells for $27 online or at Retail Therapy.

The other day I drove by a brand new shop on Dexter Ave. called Goods for the Planet. Now I’m no granola-eating, birkenstock-wearing, eco girl, but I do try to be as environmentally friendly as I can, so I stopped in. They have tons of merchandise, but I immediately zoned in on this solar-paneled backpack that generates electricity as you walk. It’s made with sustainable products, and it sports a flexible solar panel. They claim it’s the most advanced solar energy technology around and even military tested! So the next time you’re going up Wallace Falls or attempting Mt. Si, why not make electricity as soon as that sun hits your back and charge up your cell phone on the trail. This bag sells for $240.

Bellevue Square is becoming quite the hotbed for boutiques. Shoefly has opened a shop, Road is over there, so is Sway and Cake, to just name a few. Last weekend while wandering around the shopping heaven, I stopped in to Sway and Cake. The design of the store is exactly what you’d expect in a mall: longer than it is wide with no real architectural detail. But that didn’t bother me since I was there for the clothes. From hip hats to Issa dresses, the shop was like a candy store for fashion-conscious women. This winter white Ananas handbag has a purple satin lining and coconut shell rings. It sells for $375.
(Rumor has it the downtown Sway & Cake has the same bag in purple)
